Demons are Cast into Swine
The story of Jesus casting the legion of demons into a herd of pigs is found in Matthew 8:30-37; Mark 5:1-20; and Luke 8:27-39.
UNCLEAN SPIRITS
* They are fearful of Jesus, the Son of God.
* They recognise that it is their end time.
* They recognise that Jesus is their judge.
* As soon as Jesus go to Gadara, the demon possessed man recognise Him and he falls flat on His feet.
* He has not only one spirit but has a legion of spirits.
* The demons do not wish Him to punish them by sending them to the deep.
* The demons are sent to the herd of swine and in turn the swine run violently, fall into a lake and are chocked to death.
THE MEN OF GERGESENES
* They are fearful of Jesus.
* They are the herdsmen of the unclean animals.
* They are concerned with the financial impact from the loss of pigs.
* So they beg Him to depart from their region.
ATTITUDE OF THE VARIOUS PEOPLE
* The fear of His disciples is the ignorance of knowing Jesus, where as the demon possessed has the fear of knowing Jesus.
* The demons identify Jesus, whereas the Pharisees do not.
* The people of Godarenes plead with Jesus to leave their region because they have lost a herd of swines which is their livelihood and they think that it is greater than Jesus.
* But it is interesting that Jesus has told the demons to leave and then the people have told Jesus to leave.
BUT……
* …..the man who is healed clung onto Jesus to go with Him.
* He realises that Jesus is not only the miracle worker, but someone to be followed.
* Jesus gives the mission of His disciple to him, but he wants to follow Him.
* Jesus asks him to go to his house, inform what God has done for him and proclaim His name.
JESUS’ DENIAL OF HIS REQUEST (assumption)
* Perhaps as Jesus is cast out of the land, He leaves this man behind as a witness of His grace and mercy.
* And of course his greatest witness would be to his own family of whom he would appear as if one risen from the dead.
* In this way Jesus would provide a more open door in the future to this region.
HIS HEALING IS MIRACULOUS.
Let us pray……
Lord, if we are ungodly, there is no place for God in us. God, dwell in us and make us holy.
Lord, give us Your healing and let us proclaim Your name all through our lives.
Lord, let Your mission be fulfilled with us. Amen.
